As I wrote in my last newsletter, PRLF legal counsel, the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, has sent letters to prison authorities demanding all documents related to the ban, as well as making a strong case that there is no legal basis for the ban. There are important new signatories to the Statement to Overturn the Ban. In response to these kinds of salvos on the legal and political fronts, prison authorities at Pelican Bay State Prison have been forced to maneuver, even denying that there is a ban, trying to cover up and continue the ban at the same time (see article in Revolution). As the article says, it is TIME TO STEP UP AND MAKE THIS A BIG DEAL SO THE BAN IS OVERTURNED, THE REASONS FOR IT MADE PUBLIC AND SO IT CAN'T BE REINSTATED IN ANY FORM!
There are other new developments, too. We've posted readings of prisoners' letters on YouTube, and encourage you to join in. Choose one of the letters that you like the best and read it for YouTube. This is an important way that people can share them with their own networks and many more people, and can become one important way that people from all walks of life can make the demand to Overturn the Ban of Revolution newspaper a societal-wide issue.
PRLF is expanding the use of our Facebook page. Check it out, friend it, share it with your networks.
PRLF will be at the US Social Forum in Detroit this week. Our workshop, "Overturn Ban on Revolutionary Literature to Prisoners", will be Friday, June 25, from 10 am to 12 noon at Cobo Hall Room 02-42. If you're going to be at the US Social Forum or know others who will, come join us.
Revolution newspaper has created a special back page graphic with the Statement to Overturn the Ban, highlighting some of the prominent people - including a number of new signatories - who have signed it.
Go online to sign the Statement to Overturn the Ban; forward it to prominent public opinion makers who you think should sign it; share it with your friends. We are raising money to publish it in major print media, as part of getting the ban completely and fully overturned.
Fundraising is a crucial component of this battle and PRLF's work overall. In addition to the money needed to print the Overturn the Ban Statement and the ongoing cost of the 800 subscriptions, we need $10,500 to start the subscriptions for the 300 prisoners who have requested them, for which PRLF does not now have the funds.
Of the $30,000 needed by the end of June to cover these and other costs, we've raised about $4500 so far. Your financial help is needed. If you can donate $1000, $500 or make other significant contributions, please contact me right away.
We are starting an "adopt a subscription" program, which many people can join. $35 a year will provide a one-year subscription for 1 prisoner. If you can, adopt a block of subscriptions. There are 65 prisoners on the waiting list in California alone.
Give a group gift to PRLF. Donate, write a letter to five friends explaining why you are donating, and challenge them to give too. Fundraising is something that everyone can do.
